Managing the Networked Program
Overview
The Readers are Leaders application is comprised of three modules:
- Server. Runs the file-server that both presents all data used in exercises and saves recorded results.
- Admin. Two separate utilities for creating and managing grades, classes and users.
- Client. The actual module the readers use to do the reading exercises.
- The file-server module, named Dserver, MUST be running for any or all of “Readers are Leaders” to work.
- For it to run, the computer serving as the file-server, must be running and must be logged onto.
- An orange “D” icon is displayed in the right-bottom of the screen, in the Notification Tray of the computer/server it is running on, as indicated below, if it is indeed running:
- Should it not be (The exception …), then it can be initiated by clicking on “Start”, scrolling down to “Four Blind Mice Studio” (In windows 7, opening “All Programs”)and clicking on “Dedicated Server” as indicated below:
- It should then appear in the Notification Tray as previously indicated.
Creating Grades, Classes and Users
- To create users, you require Grades (Largely equivalent to School/Tertiary Grades: 1 through 15)
- Grades must have Classes (eg. A, B, C,etc.)
- Grades are selected from a predefined list (1 through 15, depending on applicable package).
- Classes are created from within selected Grades
- Creating classes or users can be done in two ways:
- User Admin module
- Network Admin module
Please Note!! The level on which users will read, is not set by the Grade/Class they are in. The level has to be specifically set for each user. The Grade/Class is merely a container in which to group a specific set of users.
- The User Admin module is more single user specific
- Network Admin is more broad, incorporating many other utilities, including bulk alterations.
Using the User Admin module to create Grades, Classes and Users
- Open the User Admin Module by double clicking on the icon on the desktop.
- The following screen will appear:
- From within the Main Menu, click on Admin
- A screen will appear in which the Admin password must be typed
- Type in the password: “roTide” (Without the double-quotes).The following screen is then presented:
- Select a Grade
- Create a Class
- Drag to the first blank line
- Provide the new class with a name
- Create a User
- Select the desired class in which to create the user
- Drag to first blank line
- A prompt will inquire if you wish to create the new user. Click on “Yes”.

- Individual entries are entered by:

- Entering the required password: “roTide”
- Selecting the desired Grade
- Creating the new class (If it does not already exist), by clicking on “Add new class”
- Selecting the class

- Entering the user details in the screen as indicated below:
- Bulk entry requires the import of a spreadsheet, that has only the three fields, Surname, Name and Password, in that order, in three columns, with NO column headings.
- Prepare the required spreadsheet, as described above, for all the users to be added.
- Open the Network Admin Module as described above.
- Select the desired grade and class.
- Click on “Import”, as indicated below:
Users create own profile
- Users can create themselves from the Client module if all the required classes have previously been created and classes are NOT locked.
- The need to lock classes may arise, where users are able to create their own profiles, and inadvertently create more than one profile for themselves.
- Classes can be locked from:
- DServer (Right-click on Dserver icon in system tray and select “Maximise”). Click on “Lock Classes”, as indicated below:
- Network Admin
Calibration
- When a user logs in and selects the language to read for the very first time, the user will be forced to first run a calibration test. This is true for both, the English and the Afrikaans read. This test will assess the level at which exercises will be presented to the user.
It is critically important to note, that the level of the calibration test MUST be set to the same level the reader has been set to!! - Once calibrated, the user is assessed during the exercises and the user’s settings adjusted accordingly, per session.
- If a reader is found to be incorrectly assessed, this may be “tweaked” in either the User Admin or Network Admin.
- In User Admin
- The User’s settings are accessed by opening the User Admin module by double-clicking on it on the desktop.
- From within the main menu, clicking om Admin will open the administration window.
- Select the required grade and class, and then select the user.
- Select the language for which the adjustment is required.
- The following screen is then presented:
- Setting “Reading Speed” to 0, will force calibration assessment being forced for that reader again.
- In User Admin
- In Network Admin
- The Grade, Class and User is selected, and then “Change Settings” is selected.
- Setting “Reading Speed” to 0, will force calibration assessment being forced for that reader again.
- All the individual settings can be adjusted to allow for the best reading experience for the reader.
Password reset
- A User password can be reset in either the User Admin or the Network Admin.
In User Admin:
- Navigate to Admin, Grade, Class, User, and the required read language

Backup of the User Data File
- The Users data-file is stored at location:

on the file-server computer that Dserver is running on.

- The current backup file name will be: UserDataBackup.mdb
- Previous data backups will have names indicating the week in which the backup was made, e.g.:
UserDataBackupWeek12 2018.mdb
Restoring the User Data File
- To restore the latest backup that was made, right-click the Dserver icon in the Notification Tray as described previously:
- Again select to Maximise the screen and click on Restore and then select “Restore Database”, as shown below:
- This will restore the most recent backup of the userdata file
- There will again be no visible evidence that the database was restored, but in fact, the latest backup would have been written to current database file, UserData.fbm
Restoring an earlier copy of the User Database
- First make a safe copy of the existing database backup file, UserDataBackup.mdb.
- The required file (Selected from the folder the user data is stored in) must then be copied as:
UserDataBackup.fbm (Overwriting the file if it already exists). - Again, run the restore procedure described earlier
- To exit the Dserver interface screen, click on “Options” and select “Minimise”.</li?
